Toyota was up 41 percent in March, Ford 40 percent, GM 21 percent (Buick sales jumped 76 percent). A raft of incentives, by Toyota as well as the others, obviously helped push deals, though everyone admits it's a questionable strategy - a little like department stores using huge markdowns to bring in customers. GM, for one, says it's trying to cool it with the incentives. "We've been down that road before and we know it's a dead end," said Susan Docherty, GM's VP for U.S. marketing. (NYT)
