First-quarter film, television and commercial production were up a total of 18 percent from a year earlier (11,087 permitted production days vs. 9,408). Commercials led the way with a 61 percent jump (car spots played a big role); television was up 14 percent (led by pilots and reality shows), and feature films gained one percent, helped by the state's tax credit program. The improved numbers come after a terrible 2009 that was mainly the result of the sour economy. For all the attention that runaway production has received, it's proving to be less of a factor in the amount of shooting that goes on in Southern California.
