Austerity at UC? Not likely

All those university employees who have taken pay cuts and all those students who have seen their tuition go up must be thrilled to hear about these numbers from the University of California (from SF Chronicle):

--The number of UC employees earning more than $214,000 rose 6.3 percent in 2009, to 3,184.

--Employees earning more than $10,000 in OT climbed 79 percent.

--An operating room nurse at UC San Francisco Medical Center took in more than $320,000, almost a third of that from overtime.

--UC spent nearly $500,000 on car allowances, giving 55 executives $8,916 per year.

--Housing allowances ranging from $107,550 to $1.3 million were given to 98 executives.

--The university paid out nearly $4 million in bonuses and incentives to 79 coaches, doctors, and finance experts.

--Head coaches Jeff Tedford of UC Berkeley and Ben Howland of UCLA took home more than $2 million.

A UC flak says that executives and faculty would be earning more at comparable public and private universities.
