The May jobless rate was 12.4 percent, down a bit from a revised 12.5 percent the previous month. Only Nevada and Michigan are at higher levels. The payroll survey shows a gain of 28,300 jobs, one of the larger state increases for the month. The jobless rate in L.A. County was 12.3 percent, from 12.2 percent in April.
