Actually, shame on us. The federal government does not allow Social Security benefits for the surviving spouses of gay and lesbian couples. As you can see from the above clip, those folks are just plumb out of luck. There's been occasional chatter about legislation allowing the spouses to receive death benefits, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
