Another down day - Dow falls 172 points

H-P dragged down stocks in a session that opened lower, then moved higher, then slid back down and stayed there (a swing of 285 points, all told). H-P fell 20 percent on the company's possible exit from the PC business. That alone took 45 points off the Dow, which is now at 10,817.
