Air fare war breaks out ... kinda

Anyone going to Dallas is in luck - American is offering $99 round-trip fares between Los Angeles and SF and Dallas/Fort Worth. (No indication in the release which L.A. airports are involved and the press office is closed.) It's not really a fare war - more like a skirmish. American is just responding to Virgin America's two-for-one deal between the two cities, starting this fall. The airlines have been trying to avoid these discount fares, both because they eat into profits and because planes are so full these days that they're unnecessary. By the way, the $99 special is not really $99 - it's $120.40 once you throw in taxes and fees.Plus, you have to make the purchase 21 days in advance. (Dallas Morning News)
