What's the dumbest marathon-related story?

marathon.jpgThat would be the media's hand-wringing over how a few news outlets screwed up by reporting that an arrest had been made in the Boston bombing. For more than 24 hours, CNN, AP, Fox News, the Boston Globe, and others have been denounced for grabbing at a story that everyone wanted. Man, I must say that journalists can be a constipated lot - so full of themselves and their high-and-mighty attitudes about news gathering. They got it wrong!! By God, they should be drummed out of our noble profession post-haste!! (Funny how some of the loudest critics are also some of the least talented journalists.). Wednesday's false alarm was predictable - there's just a lot of noise coming out of the investigation from a million different directions and lots of pressure to find the scumbags responsible. Where there's noise there's confusion, and where there's confusion there will be mistakes, some of them whoppers. Sure, a little restraint would be nice - then again, so would a nuclear-free North Korea. It's just not very realistic. Restraint is not exactly in style these days. In the end, this was not that huge a deal - the reports were posted, they were swiftly denied, and within a few hours everyone was back on track. The real error is one of priority; having a few thousand reporters from all over the country covering what's basically a local police story (terrible as it is) truly makes no sense.
