Black-crowned night heron

We were at the movies last week, in line for the inception of "Inception" when a friend pointed out the lovely bird on the lampost:who's this?

A black-crowned night heron, I thought, only because my go-to internet bird expert, Bill Schmoker, had ID'd a younger version of the same bird for me a few years ago.

Here's that photo from 2007, which means the same little family of black-crowned night herons have been quietly laying eggs and raising their young in the midst of a crowded shopping center for years. And then you wonder, how long have they been doing this (Decades? Centuries?) and how did Malibu look? a better look at the mystery baby
