The lizard in the oak

One of my favorite oak groves, a few dozen trees with huge and graceful canopies, shows signs of fire.

The bark is dark and rough, the scorch marks plainly there, once you're looking.

And here, among the scars of the fire that roared through some 20 years ago, a lizard lives, his reptile skin as dark and marked as the survivor he calls home.
