Fresh off the buyout/layoffs, the Times is bringing in San Jose Mercury News tech columnist Dawn Chmielewski to be a multimedia reporter. She used to be at the Register in Orange County. No official announcement yet at the LAT, but after the jump is the staff news making the rounds in San Jose:

All,

I'm very sad to report that Dawn Chmielewski is leaving the Mercury News to join the Los Angeles Times as a multimedia reporter.

In her brief tenure as a tech columnist, Dawn created a unique voice that was widely read in Silicon Valley and beyond. Before becoming a columnist in September, Dawn covered multimedia for nearly five years, scoring scoops and writing trend pieces that made the paper a must-read for anyone interested in the convergence of Silicon Valley and Hollywood.

Dawn joined the Merc in 2000 from the Orange County Register.

Her last day will be Friday.

Please join me in wishing Dawn the best of luck.

Todd
