Does the mayor know about this?

The Chronicle of Philanthropy has a new job posting of some importance to Mayor Villaraigosa and his Los Angeles Unified School District ambitions:

Position: Superintendent of Schools
Organization: Los Angeles Unified School District
Location: California
Date posted: 7/14/2006

SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

The nation's second largest public school district seeks a leader with the passion, talent and skills to preserve and advance the educational lifeline of the most diverse metropolitan area in America. Building on the extraordinary progress achieved during the past six years, the new Superintendent will consolidate past gains and lead the way to major new improvements in student proficiency achievement, narrowing of the achievement gap between subgroups of students, reduction of the dropout rate, and readying graduates for the lifetime learning demands of 21st century employment. Extending well beyond the boundaries of the City of Los Angeles, the District contains 858 schools serving some 727,000 K-12 students, plus numerous adult and other facilities. Whether or not a professional educator, the appointee must bring vision, ability to frame and implement effective educational strategies, knowledge of urban education issues, ability to recruit and retain excellent teachers, and deep commitment to partnership with parents and other stakeholders. No appointment will be more important to the future of urban public education.

Emphasis added on the last line. If you haven't been keeping score, incumbent Supt. Roy Romer said some time ago that he was leaving soon.
