LAT names its web editor

Meredith Artley, digital development director of the International Herald Tribune, is moving from Paris to be executive editor of latimes.com. She began at the New York Times website. Memo after the jump.

To: The Staff
From: Russ Stanton, Innovation Editor
Rob Barrett, VP/General Manager, latimes.com

We are pleased to announce that Meredith Artley, digital development director of the International Herald Tribune, has been named to the new position of executive editor of latimes.com.

Meredith will lead the 30+-member online newsroom and be responsible for the day-to-day editorial operations of latimes.com. She will oversee an expansion of the staff, a redesign of the site, the launch of new projects and play a large role in helping integrate The Times' print and online newsrooms.

She is leaving the splendor of Paris and the IHT's New York Times Co. family because, as she put it: "This is a unique opportunity to live and work in a world-class city and help grow one of the best-known media brands anywhere to its full potential online."

Meredith began her online journalism career in 1996 with the launch of nytimes.com. In her six years as the associate editor, she was responsible for day-to-day management of the site and hired many of the staff. She also oversaw special projects such as site redesigns and section launches, led the coverage of 9/11 and was on the Race in America series team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2000.

In the last four years, Meredith has had an impressive run at the IHT, where she was responsible for both the online editorial and business operations as well as being director of international strategy for nytimes.com. On her watch, IHT.com's number of unique visitors grew by more than 200%, to more than 4 million a month. The site's news cycle was expanded from about 8 hours a day to 24/7, and it was frequently improved with innovative interactive features. She launched several editorial partnerships and four mobile platforms. And her staff trained many of the IHT's print journalists to produce and edit the site.

Meredith is a 1995 graduate of the University of Missouri with a degree in broadcast journalism and also attended Appalachian State University in North Carolina.

She's aiming to start here in late March.
