Confused by Vanity Fair photos

Hilary Swank on the beach
Critic Christopher Knight found LACMA's exhibit of celebrity portraits by Vanity Fair a curious choice for an art museum — "a vanity exhibition, plain and simple" — especially since it was co-curated by the magazine itself and opens with an essay by political writer Christopher Hitchens. Meanwhile, the Times' L.A. Now blog needs to brush up on its celebrity culture, posting under this photo of Hilary Swank: "a collection of Vanity Fair magazine portraits, including the much-talked-about photo, above, featuring Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson."
