An editorial in the Daily News says the prospect of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa running for governor with the city in deep financial crisis is a no-win situation. He should not run, the paper urges.

How could he not be tempted? He's one of the most recognizable mayors in the nation. He might currently be on the cover of LA Magazine with the word "Failure" stamped on his cover photo, but most Californians will still remember his positive "Newsweek" cover from happier days. Of course this political animal is considering the next big leap.

The Daily News would like to add to the chorus of those offering advice to Villaraigosa: Don't do it.

Los Angeles needs its mayor more than ever - not someone who's halfway out the door and simply using this job to get good headlines and TV time. This is a city that raised and believed in this poor Latino kid from East L.A.. This is the city that tossed out the scion of an old Los Angeles political family to give him a chance to lead Los Angeles into greatness.

But he hasn't done it.
