Automation comes to Netflix

The movie rental company has figured out a way to have machines open its red envelopes - and it's costing the jobs of 125 part-time workers at a Santa Ana distribution plant. Netflix also is cutting 160 jobs at its Fremont distribution center in Northern California. From the OC Register:

Steve Swasey, Netflix spokesman, said the layoffs are a result of the company's effort to improve operations. "The company is automating some of its DVD rental return processes to improve speed and efficiency and reduce costs," he said. "The automation is eliminating the need for some part-time jobs but the overall story is growth at Netflix."
