Whale pod + shutter lag = almost a photo

I couldn't believe what I was seeing, a gray whale breaching so close to shore you could have heard the splash. Between your faithful photog's reluctance to look away, and the shutter lag of the little point-and-shoot, the best record I have is a shot of a subsiding wake, and a glimpse of a large back. Oh, and in the distance, the blow from what looked like a whale calf.
