Staff photographer Carolyn Cole is making the L.A. Times decision to post her in Liberia pay off, sending home fresh photos daily of the deteriorating situation. A gallery of the latest, showing today's American evacuations from Monrovia, is up on LATimes.com. Her photos on the front page of the Times have been outshining other papers. The Times website also has news updates from staff writers Ann M. Simmons and Daryl Strickland on the ground.
That photo of the kid with the big gun wearing the teddy bear backpack was especially chilling. Embarrassed to say that I didn't look for the photo credit when I saw it (I was actually too stunned by the shot), but I'll bet it was Cole's. Terrific shot.

Posted by: Kevin Roderick at July 22, 2003 12:45 AMSorry, the teddy bear backpacker photo was not Cole's. It was shot by Georges Gobet/AFP/Getty Images. http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/emergency/childsoldiers.
