More copy desk foibles

This time from the San Jose Mercury. First, the correction in Tuesday's paper:

The front-page Mike Cassidy column Saturday misstated the kind of place mats sold in Kmart under Martha Stewart's brand. They are toile place mats.

Seems a helpful editor had changed toile to toilet.

OK, true story. At least 15 years ago, a new and very young copy editor at the L.A. Times Magazine encountered a pop culture reference she wasn't familiar with. Copy reading a story about Phil Spector (I think), she edited "girl groups" to "women groups." It was changed back before seeing print.
