A reader emails an internal memo sent this morning by David G. Hall, head of the Infinity AM stations in Los Angeles: "After 45 years in this business, starting at an Army TV station in Alaska; after 33 years of working for either KFWB or KNX; and after 5 years of leading the KNX newsroom, Ed Pyle has decided to retire."

In other radio news: LARadio.com says that the KTLA Morning News has added Commander Chuck Street of KIIS to its traffic helicopter fleet.

And noted: KPFK is also airing the Alito hearings.

* Add Pyle 12:35 pm: Ron Fineman sends the rest of Hall's memo to subscribers:

[pick up]

Ed will be leaving at the end of this week. He had asked that this announcement be low key and last minute so as to cause the least amount of disruption in the newsroom, but forget that. Please come see Ed, sit in his office for a minute and remember days when carts were the new big thing, and when music was king on AM. Ask him about Tijuana.

It is with tremendous respect for Ed, everything he's done here and all the people whose careers he has touched that I announce this. We will have a small gathering next Tuesday in the 3rd floor conference room, and it would mean a lot to have you there. Details on that to follow shortly.

Until a new news director is named, Ronnie Bradford will be the acting news director of KNX.

As newspapers and television pull back from investigative reporting, foundations and other organizations are beginning to fill the void. One of the most interesting is Accountable California, a project of Local 721 of the Service Employees International Union.
