Fairey and his artL.A. artist Shepard Fairey guested with Terry Gross on NPR's "Fresh Air" tonight to explain his side of the dispute that has ensued over Fairey basing his Obama campaign poster on an Associated Press photo. The photographer, Mannie Garcia, also gets his say, along with an expert in fair use law. There's a sub-dispute going on between Garcia and AP over his employment status when he shot the photo, and thus who owns it. Fairey, of course, just ran across the photo on Google and has no claims to owning it, but he contends his use was legal. Audio links are here.
