Oui author speaks on KPFK

KPFK, the Pacifica station in L.A., has been hitting Schwarzenegger this week for serving on the board of U.S. English and the published reports that he gropes female journalists and movie set women. Today the Democracy Now! show had on Peter Manso, author of the Oui interview with Arnold in 1977. (Full transcript) He stressed that he has no problems with the behavior Schwarzenegger talked about in Oui, but he thinks that Arnold views women as "hunks of meat." He also says that 6-7 years ago Arnold paid $1 million for outtakes to Pumping Iron that may show the orgies in progress.

He’s chemically incapable of being in the presence of a woman without flirting, without sexual innuendo, without some kind of sexual play. Throughout the interview he did with me…the attitude that runs throughout is to put it bluntly, women are hunks of meat, no more, no less. That Maria Shriver should basically subscribe to the same world view is appalling.

The last sentence responds to a comment on the show by Karen Pomer, a Southern California rape-victims activist once interviewed for NBC Dateline by Maria Shriver. After the interview, Pomer claims, Shriver told her that if she was ever raped, Schwarzenegger would leave their marriage because she would be damaged goods.

Thanks for posting this Kevin. You have a great site and I enjoy it very much.

Pretty unimpressive stuff from Mr. Manso in my opinion. He is 100% correct to call out the conservatives who are supporting Arnie (for political and pragmatic reasons instead of substantive ones) but who railed on Clinton for his own "personal" problems. But then HE comes down on Arnie. And takes shots at Maria Shriver. Wonder if he ever offered the same critique/analysis of Hillary? Or of Bill? Doubt it.

Arnie's purchase of the film rights could very well have been politically motivated. But it could just have easily (more easily in my mind) been motivated by family concerns only. It's entirely possible he just didn't want Maria, the kids, and friends seeing these outtakes. So he spent a small amount of $$ (for him) to eliminate the possibility of this happening.

And finally, Manso claims Arnie is pushing a "family values BS" campaign. Quite the contrary. Arnie doesn't talk much at all about morals and values. This is precisely why some/most hard core Republicans haven't warmed to him as a candidate. In fact, most I know don't expect anything from Arnie in this area and are instead left salivating at every anti-tax quote they can find from the Terminator. He is in fact running as a liberal Republican (pro-choice, pro-gun control, etc.) who has little if anything to say about the moral condition of our culture out of fear of alienating "moderate" voters in a democratic state.

I've directed junkets with Arnold and he's fine. I've never seen anything but some extremely mild flirting. Far, far less than with Ellen before she met Anne Heche. But then the mustachioed types that inhabit the world of Pacifica might not object to that. Frankly, with the mess that the state is in, how the future gov. views women is a tiny footnote.

I heard that KPFK interview on 88.5 in Tampa and was appalled at the amount of free-flying mud that was flung with no evidence to back it up. You had a female activist for rape victims discussing a candidate's behavior based on an interview for a porno magazine that came out -probably before she was even born. It was awkward, ugly stuff, and for me the subtext was even uglier. What you did not have was any semblance of balance, even though the hostess herself seemed a little taken aback by the unfairness of it all. Anytime you want to smear someone, I guess you just call them up and make a date to appear.

To John Shea:

Just to clear up a few things...

In 1977 I was 22 years old and lived less than 5 miles from Gold's Gym in Venice. If you read the transcript of the Democracy Now! interview I did not comment directly on the OUI interview.

There is documentation and witnesses to back up everything I said on air. Again read the transcript in addition to first hand experience I indicated when I was quoting from other articles by credible journalists. After the show aired several reporters from mainstream publications have requested interviews for further information.

Democracy Now! (I am a former producer) contacted me to be interviewed. Award-winning journalist, Amy Goodman said on air that they had invited the Schwarzenegger campaign to also appear on the show, "they did not get back to us. But the invitation still stands."

The Premiere 2001 story Arnold the Barbarian that I quoted on air is even more troubling than OUI interview because it recounts allegations of sexual harassment by Schwarzenegger that happened in the last few years.
