Garrison at The Aesthetic writes:
Alright, that's it. Now that we're spending more time in the car, we've found ourselves listening to no small amount of AM talk radio, even though we rarely agree with a thing they say. Well, after one of the jackass hosts of KFI's John & Ken Show dismissed the MTA strike by snidely asserting that only "illegal immigrants" ride the bus, we're out, forever.
It's entry #578. #580 makes a plea for more opinions in newspapers in the South Bay.
Armin--you misunderstand--you must read or listen to only those who reinforce your own pre-existing beliefs. KFI, NPR--it's the same.
So, was Garrison all het up because he's an illegal or because he's not?
The simple fact is that there is no intelligent life on KFI. It is pure limbic system-reptile brain stuff. John and Ken and their ilk churn up ad revenue by spewing hatred and feeding anger junkies. To me, they are beneath contempt.
And, frankly, I don't have much regard for those who see this kind of garbage as "entertainment."
Posted by: Tim McGarry at October 25, 2003 10:38 AMAM is for fundamentalist xenophobic worker-bee philistines, FM for humanist liberal unemployed artisans. Of course The Aesthetic One is outraged by AM; simply by tuning in, he's off his own frequency.
Posted by: joseph at October 25, 2003 03:14 PMRemember, John and Ken are just entertainment, like Rush -- but Michael Moore is a dangerous, dishonest liar. As are all liberals who say anything.
By the way, Armin is a rapist who should be locked up immediately for his repeated abuse of children, not to mention arson.
Ha! Entertainment! Fun!

Posted by: Kynn Bartlett at October 25, 2003 04:00 PMJohn & Ken say controversial things to get ratings, but they also give voice to the frustrations that millions of Californians feel about things like illegal immigration. If Garrison or the posters above consider it hate or whatever, perhaps they should go to Berkeley where it's nice and safe.
Also, if not for J & K you would never have heard about the Trevor Law Group.

Demagogues may give voice to the frustrations of others, but still ought to be condemned for their poisonous effect on civil discourse and the harm they unleash on all of us.
Of course, "demagogue" may be too fancy a word for John and Ken, who are really just a couple of hucksters with a schtick.
Oh, and thanks for the suggestion, Lonewacko, but I'm staying.
Posted by: Tim McGarry at October 27, 2003 10:29 AMBetween this entry, #562 (pro-union, right or wrong), #579 (sneer quotes for the word "eco-terrorism," except when applied to corporations rather than actual terrorists), and his ultra-smarmy Peace Is Patrotic screed that lionizes Rachel Corrie, I think we can safely write off Mr. Frost as a nutjob. John and Ken have nothing to worry about.
Posted by: Xrlq at October 28, 2003 05:18 PMIt's simple, really. People who ride the bus can't listen to AM radio. It's just not possible, because of the electrical interference, although of what you can receive, KFI generally comes in the best.
AM radio is geared toward people who drive, and everyone knows it.
Posted by: Paul at October 28, 2003 11:28 PMYes you have the right to your opinion.
John and Ken say things that hurt many.
Much of it is the truth.
It is hard for democrats to understand facts.
It is hard for women to not be told how wonderful they are.
It is hard for illegal aliens to understand why they cannot get more rights than those of us that are legal.
What scares me is the fact that in a country so powerfull YOU are willing to let the DEM, LIB, BRA burner, Tree hugger tell you how bad John and Ken are.
When it is the same Democrats that want to spend your dollars on un American programs that only benifit those few political people in Sacremento.
Wkae up and stop complaining and support John and Ken be an American not a sheep.
I am a Coast to Coast fan and I only listen to Coast To Coast when I'm not listening to KLSX...the same station that's playing Howard Stern and Tom Leykis, who BTW, are blowing away John and Ken in ratings as well as the morning drive time by Howard Stern. With the Arbitron ratings out, Coast to Coast is number one. C2C beat KLSX's show the John and Jeff show, which is on the same station as Howard Stern and Tom Leykis. Yet the powers that be, KFI? Clear Channel? Want to bump C2C on January 12 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. to 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. as a rebroadcast. When Stern was being harrassed by Mexicans after the death of Selena, being fined by the FCC, protested by religious and lefists organizations, KLSX kept Stern on during the morning hours, because the ratings went up and the station generated funds. Same goes with C2C. More ratings, more $$$. Now with John (Rush Jr.) Ziegler replacing C2C, I can guarantee the station's ratings will drop. To make matters worse, I as well as many of the listeners, buy from C2Cs advertisers. I bought a car from Power, a few flaslights and a radio from C Crane Radio and I am pruchasing a mattress from Select Comfort. But if they move the show from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., I'll be sleeping and I won't know who the advertisers are, and I won't buy. I'm sure Ziegler is a great guy and extremely knowledgeable, but this night belongs to George Noory.
Posted by: J.A. Coast to Coast Fan at January 11, 2004 06:22 PMIt's amazing how emotional you people are. John, I've been in the radio industry for more than 20 years. Everything we do is based on ratings. John and Ken, Rush Limbaugh, the millions of D.J.s and I are living on a thread. All shows are based on rating and not talent. For example, Rush was a failure as a Top 40 station. Art Bell was a D.J. at a classic rock station, Phil Hendrie was also a D.J. too. When ratings drop, the P.D. drops the host. The only reason why Rush is still on the air, is because, of his drug usage. I am on in more than 60 stations, Rush? 600, so why is my ratings stronger than his? Because he's on as a filler for the other Clear Channel/EIB network. The FCC can fine a radio station for not broadcasting any sounds past three minutes. So the hick town that has Rush, is getting it for free. There are no advertising, because EIB/Clear Channel bought out most of the local stations in the mid west and south. So John, when you hear John and Ken, remember that what they are saying is no different than what I say. At home, they are a bunch of nice guy, bt in public? They are the biggest dicks. When former KFI talkshow host was arrested for domestic violence, John and Ken were railing on Leykis. Tom was found not guilty and he left his wife two years later...Tom can legally carry and conceal a gun to this day. Yet at the last ratings period, Tom beat John and Ken from ages 18 to 64. Tom lost the 65-year-old category. Heck, even John said that there are no other real talkshow host on the F.M., but the only one there is, they talk about sex. They were quite humbled. Then came the Rush. Leykis said to call 800-520-1KFI and ask John and Ken to comment about Rush's drug addiction. They refused. The poor producer said to tell Tom to stop bothering us. You see, John and Ken would not want to speak to the Leykis' fans, because, they aren't equiped to do so. What happnened to Rush is purely political and Jeb Bush wants to look good for his reelection, as well as his brother's presidential campaign, that they want to investigate Rush. Leykis said that sucked. But John and Ken merely speak on politics, but aren't creative to speak on issues that pertains to them. A good example was: Remember the illegal driver's license? Well, with George Bush legalizing or allowing the illegals that are here to stay in America, does that mean that John and Ken wasted their time asking for a repeal? Sure they're illegal, but apparently President Bush doesn't think so. So if Arnold refuses to repeal the driver's license law, which he should not, and since driving is a priviledge, why is he conentrating on Mexicans? Imagine the biggest racism lawsuit? It doesn't help much his daddy was an S.S. Now John and Ken refused to take my call. On the air? They are dicks. Off? they are the nicest guys. Yet if there is a bigger dick, the back down.
Posted by: Mike smith at January 11, 2004 07:03 PMWho is this guy in the 10-1 spot. I just listened to the last 5 minutes and I feel sorry for clear channel. He signed off with a quote from George Bush. What is that? I got news for you. L.A. is not full of Conservatives. Something is wrong when you cut off the number 1 show at that time for a younger version of Rush. You keep kissing that republican ass and pretty soon it turns into a rimjob. You are number one in the ratings. Not for long. You guys and the rest of your conservative slanted format is going to loose out if you do not learn to get some credibility back. I liked your station. Now I just feel sorry for it. It is like you just gave up.

Posted by: John Carmichael at February 19, 2004 01:46 AMI was baffled and disgruntled when KFI pulled the 10-1 Coast-to-Coast segment to bring on a hard-driving news-talk host, John Ziegler. I didn't really want to be challenged with more news and opinion at that hour. But John Ziegler has won me over. He is not "another Rush Limbaugh" (a host I rarely listen to). Listen to John Ziegler for a few hours and you will hear an unusual honesty, transparency, conscience and passion grounded in a good liberal education.

A word about Garrison the Aesthetics' frustration with KFI:
KFI is a business. They make money by stirring up emotions and controversial viewpoints. They want ratings, and they are hugely successful at getting people to listen and be entertained.
Don't be frustrated about John & Ken's remarks on "only illegal immigrants using the public bus system". They would claim the opposite tomorrow, if they sensed that public sentiment has turned around.
Look at their slogan: "More stimulating talk radio." This is what John & Ken do. Next week, they will support drivers licenses for alligators, if that'll give them even better ratings. Take it easy, man, have fun, enjoy the ride! I sure do. Same with Bill Handel, and the national giants - Rush, Art Bell. I think they are wild.
