Radio drama lives on

Good news for all of those Drama Hour fans who keep adding comments to the KNX post from Nov. 3. Don Barrett's LA Radio.com reports that starting tonight, KSUR (AM 1260) will air an hour of drama at 8 p.m. nightly. The show will repeat at 1 a.m. The first week will feature Stacy Keach’s "Twilight Zone," says Barrett.

Just want to say THANK YOU for playing the OLD TIME RADIO. I will do my best to pass on to everybody that you are now play them. I will announce it on the ham radio nets I check into as there are a lot of us out here who like to return to the past. I have been listening to your station off and on for some time now I like the type of music you play. We are going to reset all the house radios now because of the OTR and we will be a more steady fan of your station now. AGAIN THANK YOU FOR OTR. BILL HOLLIDAY

Dear Sir/Madam

I live in San Diego California and I was a drama hour listener on KNX for over 7 years and now they discontinued it. I am unable to get your radio station in San Diego could be possible to put on 540 AM also which I can pick up here.

I enjoyed listening to the drama hour everynight at 9 pm before I go to sleep.

Please advise me so I can enjoy the old radio shows in San Diego again.

Thank You

I listened to the KNX drama hour for at least 10 years and I miss it. I understand that KSUR is broadcasting it now on 1260 but I don't seem to be able to get it even though I live in Orange co. Are they going to have it on 540 too?

Posted by: Darrell Tesdall at November 30, 2003 06:13 PM

Thank you for adding the Drama Hour. I have been a KNX listener for many years. Thanks again.

Posted by: Joseph Hutchinson at December 1, 2003 12:40 PM

Are you only playing the "Twilight Zone" stories?

Will you be changing to other shows and the future. The current shows do not interest me.

Please advise.

Thank you,

Linda Hardt (aunthardt@msn.com)

Any chance you will broadcast your Drama Hour later
in the evening? We really enjoyed turning off the T.V. at 9:00, and listening to those old radio shows
every evening. Pls advise.

thanks for having a nightly drama hour - enjoyed it on KNX from the early eighties - to bad they felt they needed to be more like KFWB - they are now off my radio button and KSUR has replaced them
Thanks again

I saw in the La Times that the Drama Hour has been picked up by KSUR. In San Diego we tuned into 540 last night and were so pleased to what we have been listening to on KNX for 20 or more years. Sorry KNX I can get news elsewhere!

Thank you, thank you, ....

The new station doesn't do me any good, since I live in Las Vegas, outside the station's coverage. The KNX drama hour was heard all over the Western U.S. I could even hear it during business trips to westen Texas. KNX has done its advertisers and the community a great disservice. I started listning to radio drama on KNX about 1977 but there is no reason for anyone outside LA to listen to the station anymore, and I don't know why anyone there would want to tune in for more than a few minutes given the repetitive nature of the news. Hope the new GM reconsiders. Thanks

My husband and I enjoyed listening to knx drama hour for over10 years. I was glad to hear that another station has picked it up (ksur) but we are unable to get a clear signal where we live. Any chance we will be able to in the future. We live in the San Bernardino area (upland)

Thanks for taking over the old radio programs. I enjoyed listening to them when on KNX. Sorry they felt need to be like every other news station. I AM NOW A KSUR LISTENER. YOU ARE VERY WELCOME IN MY HOME.
Thanks Again.

Would it be possible to see an accurate schedule of all of the old/new radio programs being aired over KSUR?
It would really help as I like to record the shows to play back at a time that's convenient for me.
Thanks

I used to listen to the KNX drama hour in San Diego back in the late 90s. I'm living in the Bay Area now but it still comes in in the car sometimes. When I heard it was cancelled, I have to say that's the worst idea in the history of bad ideas. Hope the new station works out for Southlanders

Posted by: Pete at December 22, 2003 06:03 PM

I work nights and for the past several years, I have taped the 2am-3am repeat airings. I then listen to the shows while driving to work the next day. KNX missed the boat by dropping the Drama Hour. Hopefully, this will be crystal clear to station management when the winter ratings book comes out.

Because my wife and I enjoyed the Radio Drama Hour we would try to listen to KNX during the day for news instead of KFWB in order to support KNX and thank them for the Drama Hour. Guess what? We don't listen to KNX anymore!!!!

Posted by: Roger Golden at December 29, 2003 10:13 PM

I have been a KNX drama hour listener for nearly twenty years, from my years growing up to more recent relocations outside of the L.A. area (Las Vegas, San Francisco, and now San Diego). I was disheartened the other night when I tuned into KNX at 9pm and did not hear the usually drama hour programming. While I am glad 540 am has picked up where KNX left off, it troubles me that KNX could discontinue a program with such a large listening base. If KNX does have a new GM and it is his belief that he will gain more listeners by discontinuing programs as such, they are wrong. Programming sich as the drama hour were what differentiated KNX from the other news stations. In fact, I never tuned in to KNX for the news, but I did find myself listening to the news after the drama hour. Because KNX can reach such a large range of people in the western United States I hope that they will reconsider their programming change and elect to bring back the drama hour. Perhaps the change that they needed to make was in the clients they chose to advertise, not the programming that they tried to sell advertising on.

Thank you KSUR for picking up Old Time Radio. I feel like my old self again. KNX is no longer programed on any of my radios. I would listen KNX news before and after Old Time Radio or would turn it on because it was programed. No More!! KNX I think you made a big mistake!!

Being over 60 and having grown up with radio shows, I listen to all stations playing same. I even listen to a station in the Bay area. KNX played some shows repeatedly, could you try to keeping this to a minimum? I'm telling my friends about your station.

As a young child I remember listening to drama radio with my father, who is now deceased, so the program holds a special place in my heart. Thank you for continuing the program.

THANK YOU....THANK YOU....THANK YOU!!! We have now programed all our radios to KSUF. We can get news on any radio station, not just KNX! You have brought "our stories" back from the "dead"!!
Thanks again

I am glad to hear that ksur 1260 am is playing the drama hour. I started listening when my junior high school History Teacher Would play them in class every Friday. that was in 1982 and have listened ever since. It is great to be able to close you're eyes and see the Lone Ranger or Sam Spade in action or a martian From x Minus one. I was sad to see it go at KNX. when I would travel I was able to get KNX all over the West and Southwest as far as New Mexico on a good night.I now own about 100 hours of tapes and cd's for when I'm driving and get no radio reception but I will start listening to your show probably on the replay at 1:am

Thank You Again

THANK YOU so much for picking up the Drama Hour after KNX so foolishly dropped it. I've listened to the show for years and was extremely disappointed when I thought the show was gone for good. KSUR1260 has gained a new listener (and KNX has lost one). Well done!!! (PS: And thanks for keeping the embedded advertisements from the original broadcasts; they are a hoot!)

Posted by: Jeff Edwards at January 7, 2004 08:50 PM

I find it interesting that the new GM of KNX cancelled the drama hour and George Nickalaw editorials because KNX was going to become "more news oriented" and then adds Melinda Lee for two stints on the Saturday and Sunday. HUH?
Glad Melinda has a new home 'cause since Mike Roy she is the best thing going in the marketplace. Thanks KNX for the insight to broadcast her again and now, how about bringing the drama hour back.
Thanks KSUR for your forum and filling some of the void. Patrick

Thank you KSUR for opting the old radio series. I love 'em, especially "The Adventures of Phillip Marlowe." Yowza!

Posted by: mary thielen at January 12, 2004 09:49 PM

I, too, listned to KNX for over 20 years, solely because of the Drama Hour. I thought the all news format was a hoax and lo and behold Belinda Lee shows up for 8 hours of non news programming.
Very bad mistake to drop the Drama Hour! By accident one night I found KSUR 540 on my dial (live in La Mesa) and heard the Drama Hour. I was thrilled! Have now set my radio to this station. My favorite show is Jack Benny. Do you have plans to air this one? I have only been listening for one week and missed Saturday night. Was this the night for Jack Benny I wonder? Anyway, KNX has lost another listener and KSUR has gained one!

Posted by: Sherry Johnson at January 13, 2004 03:06 PM

I drive at night for a law office in Sacramento. So at 9 PM each night I would tune in to the Drama Hr. Now it is impossible to get KSUR. A little more power or a Central Valley station pick up the programing.

HOORAY! HOORAY!
Thank you so very very much, now I can get some sleep.
I have been listening to stories on the radio since I can remember, before television. So you see how much I have missed your program. In fact many of the stories that you are playing now, I may have heard as originals since I have been listening for over 60 years.
Thank you.

I live in Sedona, AZ, but lived in Altadena for a lotta years. Reason I could get KNX here in Sedona is that it's a "clear channel" AM station, so it has no competition here in the Western US. It does have a competitor in Mexico, but it's not a serious problem. Those of you who want to be able to hear the stations on which the old radio programs are now broadcast might try three things: (1) There are several portable radios available that are designed for long-distance reception. GE makes one. I've seen it for sale here in AZ, so it's likely available in CA. Also, any portable digital multiband portable radio that has a "local/DX" switch on it will likely be sufficiently sensitive to get the stations anywhere in the LA Basin. (Put it on "DX" for maximum sensitivity.) If the radio also has a "wide/narrow" switch, it will operate at a narrow bandwidth, which will give the audio a slightly "mushy" sound, but will also remove a lot of noise. Finally, rotate such a radio to maximize the signal. (2) Get an old auto radio, and power it with a 12-volt plug-in "brick". You'll also have to have a speaker or speakers. Reason an auto radio will pick up weak signals is that they're designed to do just that (at the expense of some audio fidelity). (3) Check the library for articles in Popular Electronics or others about high-gain AM radio antennas. If you're really serious about picking up the shows, a few hours work making one of these antennas shouldn't be too high a price to pay. In any case, good luck.

Dear owners and staff of KSURF. Your progreaaming is wonderful -- a great blend of Sinatra, Ella, Sarah and Diana, et al.

By the way, a side note to John Regan. I really appreciated your notes about the late , lamented trombonist Milt Bernhart, and his solo on Sinatra's "i've Got You...". I was a professional studio trumpeter for a lotta years and worked with Milt, and Billy May. I counted them as friends, and was touched at how you talked about these great musicians. Not with any syrup or phoniness, but telling it like it is, (and was!).

I was privieldged to be President of Professional Musicians, Local 47 here in Los Angeles, and know that many other professional musicians listen to your station consistently.

To all you programmers, and the other excellent on-air personalities -- thank you!
It is a joy to have your good taste and insights at the touch of my car and home radios.

I love the old-time radio shows, and am glad to get the tip on getting an antenna and a really specific AM radio.

It's a joy toi tune into your station. Keep swingin'!

Musically yours,

Bill Peterson

I Absolutely loved drama hour. I am only 21 years old but i was a big fan of listening everynight since i was a little girl to all those radio shows. Its such a shame that it had to go off the air. Unfortunately for me, I don;t have reception to KSUR. :(

Posted by: Mist at February 11, 2004 09:00 PM

You are absolutely the greatest! How about a little more of Doris Day, Frankie Laine and maybe once in a while Andy Russel and Johnny Ray.

Posted by: Gloria Briganti at February 13, 2004 10:10 AM

I love the station but what happened to the Broadway? I looked forward to listening every Sunday night but I'm having trouble finding it. I'm not a fan of the old radio shows so sadly I've had to turn the station off between 8 - 11. I really enjoy the music while studying or grading exams and I've missed it. However, I'm glad others are enjoying the old time radio shows. It's nice they have something.

BTW: Is it really necessary to have the snake oil salesman on every morning? No one should be giving advice on "nutritional suppliments" to the listeners. They don't advertise just one herb but several. I've even heard the peddler suggest listeners take 6+ pills combined with several different types.

Listeners have to remember these people are in the business of selling god only knows what and are not the least bit interested in any one's health. It's to make a buck or two. I listen to the station because I love the music. However, I really question the station's ethical policies regarding this particular form of advertising. You are putting at risk the health of every single person who falls pry to the charms of the snake oil peddler.

funny

knx told me they canceled the drama hour so their powerful station could sever san diego better (during the fires, don't you know)

but after the fires, i guess san diego didn't need the drama hour. as well as the rest of california

well, knx can kiss those golden mikes goodbye, their new programming stinks

those interviews with the "person on the street" belong with steve allan, bless his heart, not with a "news" station

but i guess, talk radio, yak, and soaps are what cleans up so knx is just following the money, forget the news

tell me i'm wrong

What's wrong with the people at your sister station KSRF?? Why did they switch to old rock and roll?? Don't they know about KRTH?? Where do we find the old smoothe music and the D-J's we liked so much?

Posted by: Bob at March 11, 2004 11:02 PM

I am very upset at ksrf for switching to rock and roll. I can only get 540 on my car radio but I REALLY ENJOYED ALL THE "OLDIES". What a shock to get in my car expecting my usual wonderful music and I was blasted by all that noise. I can't get 1260 on either home or car radio and miss your old format very much. Any suggestions to boost your output or my input for 1260? PLEASE GO BACK TO THE USUAL GREAT MUSIC ON 1260 and dump the rock and roll.
