EXT. CELESTE’S MALIBU MANSION - NIGHT

The SOUND of crashing waves echoes off a nearby reef. Two plainclothes LAPD detectives are at the door: DELAND, 45, a grizzled veteran, focuses dead ahead, while GALLARDO, 30, an eager rookie, scans the lush surroundings, including the luxury car parked in front of their unmarked sedan in the driveway. Celeste opens the door in a bathrobe and braces herself for bad news.

INT. CELESTE’S LIVING ROOM – MINUTES LATER - NIGHT

Celeste, clutching a damp handkerchief, sits shell-shocked. Deland and a Gallardo sit with her. Gallardo, fidgety, is taking notes.

CELESTE
He was watching a play?
GALLARDO
Yes ma’am... Some kind of performance art piece.
(checking notes)
Robert Burns meets Diablo Cody, from the look of it.

Deland shoots him a look. He’s ready to move on.

CELESTE
But how does someone get killed watching a play?
GALLARDO
Point of fact, ma’am, he wasn’t actually watching at the time of death. He was in the restroom.
CELESTE
The restroom? I don’t... What happened in the restroom?
GALLARDO
Our understanding, he was suffocated by a mud-like substance...
(skimming notes)
“Multiple contusions...”
DELAND
I think we’re done for now.

Deland stands. Gallardo gets up too.

DELAND
Just one more thing if you don’t mind. Your husband’s car -- it’s in Mandeville Canyon.
