Right of Way 33

As Napolitano glances to see there is in fact a line of people at the hot dog stand to his right, BUMP! -- the car with the HEADLAMPS gently taps his Lexus. Through the glare, he can see two figures in the front seat, the driver waving him to pull over.

VANDERGOOT (SPEAKER-PHONE)
Okay, sir, you’re good to go.

Traffic begins to move, as the lights down La Brea turn GREEN in sequence. Napolitano approaches the intersection slowly.

NAPOLITANO
Excellent, but I need this north-south light here at Melrose back to red. Now. And hold it red for a good four minutes.

As he speaks, the light turns RED.

VANDERGOOT (SPEAKER-PHONE)
How’s that?
NAPOLITANO
Beautiful. I owe you a chili dog.

He clicks off and grabs the wheel, burning rubber as he lurches through the intersection, just ahead of HONKING cross-traffic. The car behind him is unable to follow, until --

ON THE SUV

A FLASHING blue bubble-light appears on its dash, its police SIREN WAILS, and traffic stops to let it through the intersection.

BACK TO NAPOLITANO

Watching the mirror, he knows something’s not right. He pulls the methane map from his jacket pocket and slides it under his seat. The SUV bears down on him, bubble-light FLASHING, and Napolitano pulls over.

Two uniforms get out. The MALE OFFICER approaches the driver’s side as the FEMALE OFFICER hangs back. Napolitano rolls down the window, then puts his hands on the wheel. The cop who leans in is young and good-looking with nice hair. He seems vaguely familiar.

NAPOLITANO
I hope you’re stopping me to apologize for bumping me back there.
