Right of Way 40

There’s another KNOCK on the door.

NAPOLITANO
That’s gonna be Sam.

He opens the door to SAM, 32, a big, intensely focused Asian-American guy in shirt and tie, with two briefaces.

NAPOLITANO
Sammy, come on in, put that down. You know Detectives Deland and Gallardo? They’re helping us find Celeste. Sam Higamatsu, my administrative assistant.

They ad lib greetings. Sam flips open one of the cases, puts it on a side table.

SAM
I went over the report from the Anti-Gang Unit. I recommend you sign it before Khorsandi changes his mind. And then we’ve got two hundred and eighty media requests around the Larry Davis homicide. We need a clear strategy here. People are asking where you are.
DELAND
Sam, hold that thought. We’re trying to save a life here.
(pointed; to Sam and the mayor)
Couple of jobs maybe too.
SAM
The mayor asked me here to help.
DELAND
The mayor’s got twenty-four minutes to get to Santa Monica with a plan or he’s gonna need more help than you can give him.
NAPOLITANO
Okay, guys, here’s the deal: I’m gonna go meet the guy under the pier like he said. You hang back. Way back. I’ll give him the map and we’ll take it from there.
