IN THE TENT

The band STOPS PLAYING, and the party's HOSTESS, 40s, a bejeweled scenemaker with a bouffant hairdo and vaguely European accent, takes the mike.

HOSTESS
Hello, everyone. I hope you're having a good time.
(the crowd quiets)
Is Los Angeles the greatest city in the world or what?

The partygoers CHEER and WHOOP their support. Celeste and Larry move into the tent.

HOSTESS
The problem is, it's such a great city, everyone wants to live here. And our infrastructure has become so... overtaxed -- our educational system, our natural resources, and especially our freeways -- that we're almost strangling; we're choking on our own good fortune.

During this, Russell Napolitano, rumpled and ramrod straight, has moved into the tent toward Larry, whom he greets warmly. He hugs Celeste, and they share a quick, sexually charged glance.

HOSTESS
Luckily, we have a mayor with a vision for the future. And I know you didn't come here for me; you came to see him...to hear his plan and to be inspired by his leadership. So, Russ...? Come on up here. Mayor Russell Napolitano!
