BUDDY
Anthropology professor. I'm doing research for a book on tunnel civilizations. Also conduct tours for the historical society.

They walk in silence into complete darkness, except for the BEAM from Buddy's flashlight. A FIGURE, covered head to toe in black cloth, passes through the light, slinking along the tunnel wall toward them. Buddy hisses over his shoulder to Napolitano --

BUDDY
Move away from the wall.

Napolitano relocates as the Figure moves on.

BUDDY
I call that one “the Hermit.” Live and let live.
NAPOLITANO
I wish it was that easy.

They walk some more in near-total darkness. Then --

BUDDY
I don’t believe you killed those people.
NAPOLITANO
What?
BUDDY
You think I don’t know who you are? I voted for you twice. You’re supposed to build subways, not hide in them.

He LAUGHS. Napolitano, feeling ridiculous, pushes the hood back off his face.

NAPOLITANO
Yeah, funny joke.

The path forks in two directions. A low section of wall hangs over one pathway.

BUDDY
Watch your head.

As Napolitano ducks, he places his hand on the surface above. It's wet -- his hand slides off and he momentarily loses his balance.
