CELESTE
It’s Larry. He’s been... murdered.

Rachel is shocked. The two women hold each other for comfort. As they talk privately, Celeste holding back tears --

DELAND
(hushed, to Gallardo)
We don’t need every last detail at 4 a.m.. The corpse will still be cold tomorrow.
GALLARDO
So will the trail.
(unable to take his eyes off Rachel)
Maybe we should talk to the daughter...

Deland gives him a look, then moves to Celeste.

DELAND
We’re sorry for your loss, ma’am.

She gives him her attention, still holding onto her daughter.

DELAND
We’ll check back with you soon. In the meantime, you’d better take care of business before the cameras get here. You can bet they’re gonna have a field day with this.

And with that hanging in the air --

EXT. CELESTE’S MALIBU MANSION - DAWN

The cops walk to their sedan. Gallardo stops to jot down the license of the luxury car in the driveway, which we now see is Napolitano’s Lexus.

DELAND
Hey, genius, we know whose car that is.
(off Gallardo’s look)
Hizzoner, the mayor.
GALLARDO
What’s he doing here?
DELAND
Gee, I don't know, what do you think? Come on, maybe we can beat the traffic.

And as they get in the car --
