CELESTE
We were at a fundraising event.
DELAND
You were with him? So you must have seen who he left with.
CELESTE
No. I didn’t see him go.
DELAND
And he didn’t tell you where he was going?
CELESTE
We’re both pretty independent. But, I never would’ve...

She takes a moment to compose herself. Gallardo jumps in.

GALLARDO
So someone must have given you a ride home, then?

Deland’s look says the rookie is overstepping. Before Celeste can come up with an answer, there’s a NOISE from an adjacent room.

GALLARDO
Sorry, ma’am, we weren’t aware you had company.

Deland clenches his jaw. Actually, he was aware. Celeste gets up and, as she moves to the door --

CELESTE
You might as well come out. The police are here.

She opens it and is surprised to see it’s her daughter RACHEL, 22, and slinky as a snake in a negligee. Vavoom! Gallardo fairly gawks. Deland is surprised too. She’s even hotter than the young Celeste was, and twice as much trouble.

CELESTE
Hello, dear.
(to cops)
This is my daughter, Rachel. She’s been staying in the guest house.
GALLARDO
How do you do?
RACHEL
I couldn’t sleep, mommy.
(dreamily; re: cops)
What’s wrong?
